Environmental Issues in General When purchasing a piece of property, it is important to be aware that there could be environmental issues or liabilities associated with it. For example, you should find out if there are any underground fuel storage tanks on the the property, any known contaminated properties in the neighborhood, or any property owners who have been fined by the government for failing to meet environmental safety standards. For environmental concerns, go to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.
Don't hesitate to talk with the state, local government officials, or the seller of the property about these concerns. When you offer to purchase a property, it is state and federal law that you be requested to sign the seller's disclosure about the possibility of lead paint being present.
You also will be asked (if working with a realtor)whether you will want to have the radon levels in air and water tested. New Hampshire is an area that does have elevated amounts of radon. Understand the hazards which radon can present, and you will have a better idea of whether you want to pay for the testing or remediation for radon.
Asbestos is another concern. It can be found in siding, around pipes, and other areas. Again, it can be a concern, especially if the product shows signs of deterioration, and that particles could becoming airborne. You should find good information about all these concerns at the above link to NH's Environmnetal Agency. Another really good source for radon and other concerns is the Federal EPA www.epa.gov
